I've been having a problem where thin lines disappear when printed, but need to solve it in the PDF rather than Adobe Reader (so this is possibly a little different to the issue Martin Armstrong reported a couple of months back).
I create a PDF file (entirely using my own software, so I can put anything in it I want) and I need this to be printable by someone else without having to guide them through special options such as print as image. So I'm only interested in the creation of the PDF file, rather the than details of Adobe Reader (or whatever). I do, however, get the problem with the latest (version 9) Reader on XP. I tried automatic stroke adjustment (SA in graphics state) but it made no difference. The overall requirement is for a drawing (which might be sent to the local planning department for a new building, for example) to have fine (i.e. narrow) lines when printed, but none missing. The display on screen is ok. Is there anything else I can try?
