Invalid font

Excuse me if I'm in the wrong place, but I couldn't find a more
appropriate group to ask this question.
I received a PDF of an advert to place in my newspaper in IDCS3. No
problems there. When the PDF exported from ID containing this ad
arrived at the printers, their imagesetter rejected it because of an
invalid font.
The ad was produced in MS Publisher and printed to PDF by Nuance PDF
Create 5. Its author claims he only used Arial, but checking the PDF
I see that it contained a bulleted list, and the bullet was taken
from Symbol which is, I believe, a Windows standard MT font. In the
original PDF's properties, I see the font recorded as Symbol00Enc
(Embedded Subset), TrueType (CID), Identity-H, and this carries
through to the ID-produced PDF.
Nuance state - oddly? - that "PostScript Type 1 (.ttf) and OpenType
PS (.otf) fonts are not supported by ... PDF Create."
Is the '00Enc' suffix a Nuance invention, or does it belong to the
PDF spec? Was this the cause of the error? There were many other TT
CID Identity-H encoded fonts in the file, so it's not that the
printer couldn't handle these.
